Visa Requirements for Layover in Turkey
Visa information online can often be outdated or misleading. To avoid last-minute surprises that could affect your layover experience, always check the latest updates from official sources before your trip.
Can You Leave the Airport?
YES – If you plan to explore the city during your layover, you’ll exit the airport and enter Türkiye. You must follow visa entry rules.
NO visa is needed if you stay inside the international transit zone. But you won’t be able to take a tour or visit the city.
Do I need a visa to leave Istanbul Airport for even 1 day?
Travelers need to officially enter Türkiye if they want to leave the airport during a layover—even if it’s just for a few hours. Whether or not you need a visa depends on your nationality and how your flights are booked.
Who Does NOT Need a Visa to Enter Turkey?
These nationalities can visit Türkiye visa-free for tourism (up to 90 days):
United States
Canada
China
United Kingdom
Most EU countries (France, Germany, Netherlands, etc.)
Japan,
South Korea,
New Zealand
Passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date.
No e‑visa or additional documents required to join your layover tour.
You’re free to leave the airport and explore Istanbul during your layover. No e-Visa needed. Just go through passport control, store your bags (if needed), and enjoy the city.
