- Plan Time to Exit: Allocate about 45–60 minutes after landing to complete passport control, customs, and reach your meeting point.
- If You’re on a Layover: Don’t follow signs for “International Transfer” — that keeps you inside the terminal.
- You’re exiting the airport to explore Istanbul, so you need to follow the signs for “Arrivals” → “Passport Control” → “Exit / Çıkış”.
Step-by-Step: Leaving Istanbul Airport
Step 1: Follow “ARRIVAL / TRANSFERS” signs after deplaning
Once you land, follow the yellow “Arrival/Transfers” signs. It may be a long walk with window zig-zags, just keep going.
Step 2: Go Down the Escalator
You’ll see signs still saying “Arrivals/Transfers.” Follow them down an escalator. At the bottom floor, the signs change to:
- Passport Control
- Baggage Reclaim
Ignore “International Transfer”. Your destination is Istanbul, so you’re leaving the airport.
Step 3: Enter Passport Control (Not Transfers)
Look for the blue-tinted PASSPORT CONTROL area on your right. Non-Turkish passport holders will join the line for Other Nationalities.
If needed, present your e-Visa (US, EU, and Canadian citizens are exempt – double-check if you’re unsure).
Step 4: After Passport Control → Baggage Reclaim
Turn left, then right, then go down the escalator. You’ll follow signs for Baggage Reclaim.
Even if you don’t have checked bags, this is your way to customs and exit.
Step 5: Through Baggage Area → Find “EXIT / ÇIKIŞ” Sign
You’ll either walk through a barrier or through the shopping area, then go left. Find the big yellow “EXIT / ÇIKIŞ” sign.
Step 6: Customs Check
You’ll go through Turkish Customs:
- Green Lane: If you have nothing to declare.
- Red Lane: If you have goods to declare.
Step 7: Final Hallway → Walk Right
After customs, walk right toward Burger King. On the left, you’ll see hotel and tour desks. Keep going straight.
Step 8: Exit the Terminal via Door 13
Look up to see another yellow EXIT sign. Turn left and exit the terminal via Door 13. This is the main exit door for guests with private tours / transfers.
