Suleymaniya Mosque

Suleymaniye Mosque; there are only a few structures in the world that truly encapsulates the city or country that they are in, one of which is the Suleymaniye Mosque. Also known as the Mosque of Suleyman, was built in the 16th century by a renowned Ottoman architect of his time – Mimar Sinan. The magnificent mosque was constructed for Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent and hence was named after him. It took a total period of seven years – from 1550 – 1557 AD – for this legendary mosque to come into being.

Like all other large mosques of this historical era, this stunning attribute to the Legislator is surrounded by a madrassa, kitchen, hospital, library, hamam, and arasta. The beautiful mosque wasn’t just designed as a holy place to worship but is also a charitable foundation, also called as, kulliye. This breathtaking complex has been the epitome of welfare as it has provided food to nourish the city’s poor, whether they are Muslims, Christians, or Jews.

The entrance of the mosque boasts a forecourt with a splendid fountain. The exterior of the mosque is also embellished with gorgeous blue-hued Iznik tile window lunette. The Suleymaniye Mosque boasts of four minarets which are located at the mosque’s four distinct corners. The taller two minarets include three galleries, while the shorter ones encompass two galleries each. Note that this great mosque had the largest dome, coming in at a whopping 174 in its height, at the time it was built.

On the other hand, the interior of the mosque is a huge, square-like space that is approximately 59 meters in length and 58 meters in width. The Qiblah wall is the most enthralling of all sights as it features amazing iznik tiles. Plus, on both sides of the mihrab are Islamic calligraphy tiles that beautifully characterize the verses of Surah al-Fateha.

Visit Hours: The visiting hours of the Suleymaniye Mosque are from 09:00 to 18:00 daily. However, the mosque doesn’t allow visitors during prayer times.

Suleymaniye Mosque is located 39 km away, 35 – 45 minutes driving distance from Istanbul Airport. However driving duration depends on time of day and whether it is working day or weekend.
